No one wants to be overweight. It’s an uncomfortable and unhealthy way to live your life. Can you remember in science class learning about all the life processes that defined healthy/ your ability to survive? To refresh your memory, they are movement, reproduction, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, respiration, and growth. How many of these can you picture being an issue due to obesity?

A study in the UK made a connection between chronic inflammation and weight gain (Shah).  Majority of the diseases we hear about on a daily basis are all caused by inflammation in the body. The journal Oncogene’s research discovered anti-inflammatory compound curcumin is most proficient in treating inflammation, while aspirin and ibuprofen are least. In fact, curcumin can be found in turmeric which has been used for its health benefits in India for over 4,500 years. Studies show the diet in India has a lot to do with their lower rate of cancer all thanks to Turmeric (Ji).

What is turmeric?

Turmeric is a root and it belongs in the same family as ginger. In India and other southern parts of Asia, it is nicknamed the “Golden Spice of Life.” This spice is used for its powdered root, essential oils and curcumin. It has provided centuries of medical benefits. This amazing root contains high amounts of manganese, iron, fiber, vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin C, and magnesium (Marcela).

Turmeric cannot be used alone as a diet program, but it does an amazing job of accelerating any weight loss program’s results.

Here’s how turmeric benefits your diet.

1. Aids in liver health to promote weight loss

According to Turmeric for Health, when you put on extra pounds the liver becomes the extra storage area for fat. If your liver can’t keep up with the fat, it will result in hardened arteries, your brain and accelerating aging.

The antioxidants found in turmeric root detoxify the liver. The liver is responsible for making bile used to aid in the digestion of food. If food is moving out of the body you are able to prevent inflammation and extra fat from being retained by the body. Excess fat is the reason 600,000 Americans no longer have their gallbladder (100 Awesome Health Benefits of Tumeric).

Majority of the illnesses listed below result from issues with your liver. It’s also important to keep in mind that over the counter drugs damage the liver. This is the reason majority of the people on medication have difficulty losing the weight.

2. Curcumin lowers bad cholesterol.

Cholesterol can cause an interruption in your blood flow leading to a heart attack. You need more high-density lipoprotein than low-density lipoprotein. Turmeric helps you better manage your levels of low-density lipoprotein in your body. This golden spice provides protection against hardened arteries.

The best way to consume turmeric root for high cholesterol is as Turmeric milk or turmeric tea. You can help your body better absorb the spice by combining it with black pepper (100 Awesome Health Benefits of Tumeric).

3. Reduces risk for type 2 diabetes

A study in Thailand found that curcumin prevented prediabetes from evolving into diabetes. Your beta cells live longer when you add turmeric to your diet. This means you are able to produce insulin.

4. Stops arthritis.

Unwanted pounds on your joints can lead to pain and discomfort. Turmeric stops the deterioration of the bones, stops swelling, no more redness, and the potential loss of function in the joint (100 Awesome Health Benefits of Turmeric). Turmeric is recommended in supplement form.

5. Cures Candida.

Tumeric root increases the good flora in your digestive system. In addition, it assists with digestion, is a natural antibiotic, promotes metabolism in the body, and purifies the blood by helping your body better absorb minerals (100 Awesome Health Benefits of Turmeric).

Here’s how to make turmeric tea, aka “liquid gold.”

  • Bring four cups of water to a boil.
  • Add one teaspoon of ground turmeric and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Strain the tea through a fine sieve into a cup; add honey and/or lemon to taste.
  • Add a pinch of black pepper to increase absorption (Weil).

Turmeric is an amazing natural cure for many ailments, but it’s an herb so you have to be careful when consuming it while on medication. According to Turmeric for Health, always ask your doctor when adding an herb to your diet. Especially if you are taking stomach acid-reducing drugs, diabetes medications or blood thinners. You should limit your intake of turmeric If you are suffering from gout or kidney stones (100 Awesome Health Benefits of Tumeric).

How often do you think of your health? Why do we wait until we have a health issue to change how we live, eat/drink, sleep, or exercise? Our daily decisions to compromise our health leads to medical bills for surgery we could have avoided by focusing on staying healthy.

It’s sad in our society how many of us have accepted that someday we will need pills to help us live longer, will be obese, have diabetes, and so many other ailments. None of these are a requirement of aging, yet, we view them all as a rite of passage.  If you compare our ailments in the United States with other parts of the world you will find cancer, diabetes, and many other diseases are suffered by less people. Ancient superfoods is part of the answer. Give turmeric root a try to push your health in the right direction.
